“𝙃𝙖𝙞𝙧 𝙊𝙞𝙡 𝙈𝙖𝙜𝙞𝙘” by Anu Chouhan is an ode to the culture of hair-oiling between parents and children. In South Asian families, it is customary for mothers to apply hair oil to their daughter’s hair at least once a week before shampooing it off.

In the story, little Meenu Kaur soon discovers that the magic of hair oiling is not in the oil, but a mother’s love and bonding that creates a fuzzy feeling during the oiling.

I do miss the days when my daughter was younger and I used to oil her hair before making tight braids. Nostalgia aside, my teenager tells me though that during the hair oiling, she could ‘feel’ my mood and that she could distinctly tell if something was bothering me! The magic of hair-oiling indeed!
