As I flipped through the pages of the newly crowned Caldecott winner “𝗛𝗼𝘁 𝗗𝗼𝗴” by Doug Salati, I was amazed at the limitless teaching points. An almost-wordless book about an ordinary dog in an unbearably hot ordinary day that leads to a trip to the beach with the owner and ends with happy dreams, you just do not have to be a dog lover to love this one. On every page, there are illustration techniques that will lead you to good writing strategies they suggest. Some of these include:
- Positioning perspective as the dog refuses to move
- Using scenes to show different actions
- Depiction of a windy day (the dog’s ears, the lady’s hat)
- Movement lines (loads of them!)
- Shadows to show the time of the day.
This is a great mentor text that must be there in your teaching arsenal!
