Poetry is so often made formulaic by well meaning educators, that many children look at it as ‘yet another genre; yet another unit’. This book isn’t a didactic “how-to” book, but one that would stir your poetic soul. This will be an asset for Grade 3 and above with figurative language, personification, text layout and voice to consider, embellished with inspiringly gorgeous collage art.

Do not forget to read the note from Kwame Alexander. His observation that children’s first words emerge like a repetitive chant, likening it to poetry, makes me draw parallels with Don Graves’ famous lines on children’s writing.

Next stop? Waiting for Kwame’s memoir “Why fathers cry at night” that releases later this month…
