I was attracted to this picture book title, because of its similarity with one of the couplets of Kabir Das, a 15th century Indian poet who was highly critical of organised religion in any form and instead believed in humanity.
This picture book is more than profound and a great reminder for us as we count down into the holiday season. Slow down, take a step back, share without the expectation of return and you will always have enough⦠Swipe to see some of my favourite pagesā¦
PS. Hereās the couplet from Kabir Das Ji; he wrote in vernacular Hindi, influenced by the Braj, Bhojpuri and the Awadhi dialects:
ą¤øą¤¾ą¤ą¤ ą¤ą¤¤ą¤Øą¤¾ ą¤¦ą„ą¤ą¤æą¤, ą¤ą¤¾ą¤®ą„ ą¤ą„ą¤ą„म ą¤øą¤®ą¤¾ą¤Æą„¤
ą¤®ą„ą¤ ą¤ą„ ą¤ą„ą¤ą¤¾ ना ą¤°ą¤¹ą„ą¤, ą¤øą¤¾ą¤§ą„ ą¤Ø ą¤ą„ą¤ą¤¾ ą¤ą¤¾ą¤Æą„¤ą„¤
(May I have enough to sustain my world (ą¤ą„ą¤ą„म), may I not go hungry (for needs? wants? Up to you to interpret!) and may I satiate the hunger of those around me (ą¤øą¤¾ą¤§ą„ - saint/people - again, up to you to interpret!)
