With Ramadan round the corner, if you are looking for a good read-aloud for younger children, the recently published “𝗠𝗼𝗼𝗻’𝘀 𝗥𝗮𝗺𝗮𝗱𝗮𝗻” is a perfect choice. The narrative is told from the perspective of the moon and highlights Ramadan traditions in various countries across the world. Author and illustrator Natasha Khan Kazi’s website also has a plethora of engaging post-read-aloud activities. Beautiful illustrations, simple and lyrical text, this is a must-read during Ramadan!
From her IG handle, I learned that Natasha was born in Dhaka and later emigrated to the US where she was an “ESL student” who was told that “immigrants can’t excel at English”. Beyond the message of the book, Natasha’s achievement will be so uplifting for many emergent bilinguals, and a reflection of possibilities beyond stereotypes. Oh, the joys of achieving exactly what the world proclaims is beyond your reach!
