Katherine Applegate has woven her magic again – this time with otters and free verse. Lovers of Ivan would feel that pulse of anticipation once more.
This story is inspired by the otters of Monterey Bay Aquarium that rehabilitates orphaned otter pups back into the wild waters. Odder who was orphaned, has grown up to be a fearless and curious otter. But a chance encounter with a shark changes everything. Will she survive the assault? What will happen to Odder’s friend?
I like the non-linear structure of the narrative, and similar to Ivan, the story is predominantly told from Odder’s point of view. Readers in Singapore, because of their experience of otter sightings along the Singapore River, would find a personal connection. Such an insightful book on the ocean ecosystem and the life and role of otters!
This book is so good, I am reading the advanced copy once again. Can’t wait to hold the hard copy in September ’22!
