From the author of “𝘞𝘩𝘦𝘯 𝘓𝘰𝘭𝘢 𝘝𝘪𝘴𝘪𝘵𝘴” comes another tender story “𝘙𝘪𝘥𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘛𝘩𝘳𝘰𝘶𝘨𝘩 𝘙𝘪𝘤𝘦 𝘍𝘪𝘦𝘭𝘥𝘴.”
When Mateo and his dad visit the Philippines for a family reunion, they encounter friends, foods, fishing trips, broken tires, big ants, and beautiful landscapes. As they spend time together, they discover facets of one another hitherto unknown. Mateo sees the adventurous side of his dad while dad sees his younger self in Mateo.
As I read this book to the class, I could see an instant connection for some of the students. On the spread where Mateo and dad cycle past mountains that look like they are made of chocolate, one of the students exclaimed that these are the Chocolate Hills in the Bohol Island.
Perfect “mirror” for students who have experienced life in the Philippines and a “window” for everyone else! Great read-aloud for K and above.
