Most books on incarcerated parents skirt the sensitive issue – not this one. This book dives right in. It is a poignant tale of six-year-old Queenie’s worries as her mother would have to go to jail for 2 years for substance abuse (Queenie’s mother has been sick since Queenie was very small).
Mean girls at school tell her that her Mama takes drugs, but Grandma consoles her that just because Mama is sick doesn’t mean that she is bad. The day comes when Queenie, Grandma and Mama take the bus ride to the jail. Queenie wonders what her Mama’s cell would look like – would she have a bed; would it be cold; are there warm blankets? When would Queenie meet her Mama again?
Children with incarcerated parents also need to see themselves reflected in books. Their worries also need representation.
This is a one-of-a-kind book that must find a place in your class library!
