Fans of Charlotte Zolotow would know that this is not a new book. First published in 1968, this is being republished with beautiful new illustration by Benjamin Chaud and hits the shelves on 28 September 2021.
The protagonist reminisces about a dear friend he had, of memories they made together. One day, he called for her, but she wasn’t there. He goes looking for her and finds her with a different friend, treading the same path, singing the same songs that they had sung… He cries himself to sleep and dreams that he too had found a new friend for new adventures…
I’m sure you now wonder if our little protagonist would wake up from his sleep… Was it all just a bad dream? Or would he really find a new friend? Would the old friend come back? Would he make peace?
I won’t spill the beans here – but all I’d say is that this is a Charlotte Zolotow book – a book from none other than the master of endings!
Now where’s my box of tissues…
