The Nguyen Kids Series

I just finished reading “𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗡𝗴𝘂𝘆𝗲𝗻 𝗞𝗶𝗱𝘀: 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗦𝗲𝗰𝗿𝗲𝘁 𝗼𝗳 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗝𝗮𝗱𝗲 𝗕𝗮𝗻𝗴𝗹𝗲” and I am sure fans of Junie B. Jones and Mindy Kim would lap it up! This new series by Linda Trinh is about an American family of Vietnamese origin. The protagonists are 3 siblings, Anne, Liz and Jacob. Each of them inherits an artefact from their late Grandma Nội.

In the first book, Anne, the eldest sibling, discovers that the jade bangle she has inherited has magical powers, and when she puts it on, she can connect with her beloved Grandma. The first book is about discovering who you are, valuing your heritage and understanding your ancestral background. It is also about standing up for your culture and standing up against racism – all folded into a child-friendly story.

Grades 2 to 4 would love the series. I can’t wait to start reading the second book, “𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗣𝗼𝘄𝗲𝗿 𝗼𝗳 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗣𝗲𝗮𝗿𝗹 𝗘𝗮𝗿𝗿𝗶𝗻𝗴𝘀” about Liz, the middle child. Both books 1 and 2 release on 18 October 2022.
