The Rock In My Throat

This tender picture book holds your heart from the very first page. Kao Kalia Yang shares her childhood experience with selective mutism after her family migrated to the United States, when the world suddenly felt too big and her voice too small. At home, she spoke Hmong with ease, but at school her words turned into a heavy rock in her throat. She wanted to speak, to be seen, but her voice would not come out.

What makes this story ache is that no one - neither her parents nor her teachers - understood her silence. Jiemei Lin’s tender illustrations wrap the story in warmth and longing. As a substitute teacher, I often see notes that say, “X does not want to speak,” when the truth is much deeper than that. This book reminds us that silence is not refusal. It is often fear, anxiety, and a quiet plea to be understood.
