If you are a K-5 literacy teacher, “There’s Research for That” is a must-read. Written by Heidi Anne Mesmer and Katie Hilden, this PD books provides us with what research says about literacy instruction. For example, what does research say about teaching high-frequency sight words; in the age of phones and computers, should handwriting be taught; for oral reading practice, should students read the same text repeatedly or read different texts; and much more.
Sure, we’ve probably seen the research in other books—maybe even highlighted it in a moment of ambition—but keeping up with the latest findings is still important. After all, we need to know why we do what we do… and make sure our teaching practices haven’t started collecting dust alongside the overhead projector! Happy reading!
