Sometimes libraries know not the precious gems they discard! One such ‘𝘥𝘪𝘴𝘤𝘢𝘳𝘥𝘦𝘥’ book is one I keep close to my heart.
If you are seriously into wordless picture books and their history, this collector’s item is just for you. “𝘞𝘰𝘳𝘥𝘭𝘦𝘴𝘴/𝘈𝘭𝘮𝘰𝘴𝘵 𝘞𝘰𝘳𝘥𝘭𝘦𝘴𝘴 𝘗𝘪𝘤𝘵𝘶𝘳𝘦 𝘉𝘰𝘰𝘬𝘴: 𝘈 𝘎𝘶𝘪𝘥𝘦” by Virginia Richey and Katharyn Puckett is a compendium on the subject. It lists wordless picture books starting from Ruth Carroll’s 1932 classic “𝘞𝘩𝘢𝘵 𝘞𝘩𝘪𝘴𝘬𝘦𝘳𝘴 𝘋𝘪𝘥”.
𝙒𝙝𝙖𝙩 𝙚𝙡𝙨𝙚 𝙙𝙤𝙚𝙨 𝙞𝙩 𝙞𝙣𝙘𝙡𝙪𝙙𝙚?
• An alphabetical list of all published authors of wordless books with synopses (1932 – 1992).
• A title index of all wordless picture books published during this period.
• An index on the use of print – for example, “Almost wordless – dialogue”, “Wordless – hidden print”, “Wordless – signs”…
• An index of wordless book series.
• A subject index (e.g. allergies, alligators, anger, bullies, mountains, scolding, yawns…)
Now isn’t this absolutely fascinating?!
