I have an unusual book recommendation for you on the eve of Diwali/Deepavali. Like me and countless others, if youโve been following Bisan Owda (โ๐๐ตโ๐ด ๐๐ช๐ด๐ข๐ฏ ๐ง๐ณ๐ฐ๐ฎ ๐๐ข๐ป๐ข ๐ข๐ฏ๐ฅ ๐โ๐ฎ ๐ด๐ต๐ช๐ญ๐ญ ๐ข๐ญ๐ช๐ท๐ฆโ), like me and countless others, if you believe that the spirit of Diwali lies in hope over despair, light over darkness, then this festive season, read โ๐ง๐ต๐ฒ๐๐ฒ ๐ข๐น๐ถ๐๐ฒ ๐ง๐ฟ๐ฒ๐ฒ๐: ๐ ๐ฃ๐ฎ๐น๐ฒ๐๐๐ถ๐ป๐ถ๐ฎ๐ป ๐๐ฎ๐บ๐ถ๐น๐โ๐ ๐ฆ๐๐ผ๐ฟ๐โ. I urge you to read this beautiful picture book set in Palestine about migration, and as history repeats itself, the reader in you would realise that it isnโt about taking sides based on religion, politics and nationality, it is all about taking sides with people like Oraib, and in todayโs context, with people like Bisan, Plestia and Motaz (citizen journalists; young men and women who once had hopes and dreams), it is all about taking the side of humanity.
Read Oraibโs story aloud to your class kids, Oraib, the authorโs grandmother, who had to migrate because war came, Oraib, who inspires love, hope and resilience.
