There is just one way to describe this graphic novel memoir – Incredible! Tommie Smith’s iconic Black Power Salute at the 1968 Olympics is well known. But why did he do what he did? And what happened after he and John Carlos raised their black-gloved fists?

The text and the illustrations of this memoir are so compelling that it is difficult to come ‘out’ of this book. Questions on fair treatment and equitable practices linger in my thoughts even as I write this. Was their expulsion and subsequent hardships they went through fair? Why does the dominant culture get to decide what is just and fair?

This book is a must-read for Grades 5 and above. Sure to leave a lasting impression! Out in the world on 27 September.
